Dr. JoAnn Deak Challenges Students to Stretch Themselves

Dr. JoAnn Deak visited Villa Maria on October 1, and challenged students, faculty and parents to focus on the opportunity for intellectual and social growth during the teenage years. In all her talks Dr. Deak discussed the importance for girls of developing risk tolerance and grit, and illustrated her points with findings from research in brain function and development.

Working with the girls in the the morning, Dr. Deak conducted exercises designed to illustrate for the girls the effects of distraction, risk and stress. Afterwards, she talked with the girls about capitalizing upon the plasticity of the brain during adolescence, and urged them to stretch themselves by attempting the things they found difficult both academically and socially.
