Katie Virtue ’99 Discusses Broadcasting Career with Students

Katie Virtue, Villa Maria Class of ’99, came back to campus on October 9 to meet with the seniors in the Public Speaking class about her career as a broadcast meteorologist. After graduating from Penn State with a meteorology degree, Virtue was hired to do the weather for a television station in Iowa. Drawing on her ten years in the business, Virtue discussed how she acquired her on-air speaking skills, emphasizing the need to know the topic well, practice a great deal, and “fake it ’til you make it.”

In addition to providing lots of practical advice on public speaking, the Villa alumna engaged the girls with stories from her years on air, at one point demonstrating how easily she changes over from her normal speaking voice to her broadcasting voice.
