Golfer Basso Commits to Penn State

Villa Maria senior Cara Basso has committed to play golf for Penn State next year, continuing an athletic career that has been highlighted by several high school titles.

Four year varsity player and two year captain, Basso posted three career top 10 finishes at the PIAA State Championship. In 2012, as a sophomore she won the PIAA Class AA State Championship by ten strokes with a final score of 150 (78-72) +6. She was also the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies (AACA) League medalist in 2013 and 2014. She was named the Philly Junior Tour Girls 13-15 Player of the Year in 2011 and the Daily Local News Player of the Year in 2012. Basso, who says she has loved golf since the third grade, is coached by Master PGA Professional Harry Hammond, winner of the 2012 PGA Bill Strausbaugh award.

Basso, who is ranked 90 in the 2015 class according to Golfweek Girls’ rankings as of November 2014, has considerable junior tournament experience. She won the International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) Hershey Links, Hershey PA in 2013, the final tournament played at the now-closed course. She had several top 5 American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) finishes in 2014, tying her best three-day score of 219 (71-72-75) +3 at Ravenswood GC, Rochester, NY. She earned second place, finishing one stroke behind the leader, at the IJGT Major Championship in Orlando, FL in 2014 with a final score of 219 (71-75-73) +3. She placed sixth at the Hudson Junior Invitational, Hudson OH with a final score of 227 (77-75-75). She was the playing captain of the IJGT Euro Cup USA team, St Andrews, Scotland in 2014, winning 5 of her 6 matches against Canada and Scotland. Basso posted a third place finish at the PGA Junior Series at Penn State in 2014 with a score of 152 (76-76) +8. She made her first attempt to qualify for the US Women’s Open in 2014 playing 36 holes at Hermitage CC in Richmond, VA.

In addition to golf, Basso is on the Villa Maria Academy swim team and plays the guitar with the school’s Music Ministry group. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Latin Honor Society, and is an AP Scholar. Basso plans to study business at Penn State.
