The Villa Maria Swimming and Diving team captured their 13th straight District 1 Team Championship. The District Meet was held February 26 and 27 at LaSalle University.
Day 1 started with a win, by 5 seconds, in the 200 Medley Relay. Emily Cornell, Katelyn Chick, Olivia Giampietro and Julie Dobson were on the relay team. In the 200 Free, Maura McManus and Grace Carey got 4th and 6th, earning district medals. Hope Reynolds took the bronze in the 200 IM, Olivia Giampietro took the gold medal in the 50 free. Kaitlyn Agger, Julie Dobson and Mary Katherine Clark took 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the 100 Fly. The day ended with another 5-second win in the 200 Free Relay.
Day 2 got off to a great start with Maura McManus and Katelyn Chick earning 3rd and 4th place in the 100 free. Grace Carey and Kaitlyn Agger made the podium in the 500 free. Alyssa Myers also dropped 5 seconds from her seed time in the 500. In the 100 back, Emily Cornell secured 2nd place, missing the gold by 0.40 seconds. Hope Reynolds and Kira Buchler also made it to the medal stand in the 100 back. In the 100 Breast, Katelyn Chick and Nicole Saladino made it to the medal stand. Liz Law and Valerie Sander saw impressive drops as well.
In the final event, the 400 Free Relay, the Hurricanes completed the sweep of the relay events (a Hurricane tradition at districts). Final meet score: Villa Maria 485, Nazareth 265, Gwynedd Mercy 248.
The members of the district team are Kaitlyn Agger, Kira Buchler, Grace Carey, Ashlyn Chermol, Katelyn Chick, Mary Katherine Clark, Emily Cornell, Susan Dalton, Julie Dobson, Julia Giampietro, Olivia Giampietro, Francesca Grill, Kyra Kowalewski, Lizzy Law, Maggie Malecki, Amy McHale, Maura McManus, Maggie McNamara, Sammy Murphy, Alyssa Myers, Becca Ostien, Dana Ratner, Hope Reynolds, Nicole Saladino, Valerie Sander, Nina Smith, and Erin Zimmerman. The swimmers needed to achieve a district qualifying time in their event and the divers needed a district score to participate in the District meet.
The state team will be finalized based on results from District meets held this weekend around the state. The team will be off to Bucknell on March 11 and 12 in hopes of bringing home their 5th straight State Championship. Congratulations on a great performance!
