Villa Maria Academy held a ceremony to bless and cut the ribbon on the Maurene Polley Field turf athletic facility on Thursday, October 8. Under bright morning sunshine the entire school community — students, alumnae, staff, and benefactors — gathered to celebrate the new field with former coach and field namesake, Maurene Polley, the woman who dedicated 46 years of her life to VMA. Thanks to the efforts and support of so many people this “field of dreams” has become a reality.
The day started with a procession of the student body to mid-field, where they joined the administration and field donors. Father Flynn led a field blessing prayer service that recognized all those responsible for the construction, and prayed for the success and safety of all those who will use the field. Maurene Polley thanked everyone and expressed her excitement and gratitude. She wished all the VMA athletes luck and hoped that many championships would be celebrated on the field. Included in the ceremony was the playing of “Green Tree,” an original composition by alumna Anna Wilson, penned just for this occasion.
Villa Maria Academy thanks all its very generous benefactors, without whom this fantastic field would not be possible.
