Elizabeth McKenzie, senior at Villa Maria Academy High School, is featured soloist in American premiere of “Hildeagrd VonBingen: Bambina Mistica (Child Mystic)” an Italian cantata dedicated to the formative childhood of legendary German Saint: Saint Hildegard. The cantata speaks of the courage, sensitivity and nobility of Hildegard who would grow up to be a Benedictine abbess, writer, composer, painter, philosopher, Christian mystic, visionary, creator of her own language and often outspoken critic of ecclesiastical and political corruption, yet sought after advisor to Kings and Popes, an unprecedented accomplishment for a 12th century woman.
“Hildeagrd VonBingen: Bambina Mistica (Child Mystic)” will have its American premiere on Sunday, November 8 at Our Lady of Angels Chapel in the convent of The Sisters of Saint Francis of Assisi of Philadelphia, in Aston, PA.
Liz McKenzie’s journey was chosen in early 2015 as 1 of 10 young Philadelphia area sopranos by International Opera Theater to travel to to Santa Maria degli Angeli Basilica in Assisi, Italy, in the summer. She performed there in the world premiere of the opera as part of Assisi Suono Sacro Festival 2015 in front of The Proziuncola (the cell where Saint Francis died) and then at La Scarzuola, a monastery founded by Saint Francis, where she and the other 9 girls, along with a professional Italian soprano, presented the cantata. She portrays the role of Grazia (Mercy), one of the 16 Virtues named by Saint Hildeagrd, as well as the role of La Nutrice (the Nurse).
“Hildeagrd VonBingen: Bambina Mistica (Child Mystic)” will premiere in American as part of Global Philadelphia Festival 2015. Admission is free and all are welcome!
