Art in chemistry or chemistry in art?
That is the question that was explored when Mrs. Andraka’s chemistry classes met in Mrs. Brown’s art classroom to design a ceramic tile that represented an element from the periodic table. The students painted the chemical symbol and atomic number on a ceramic tile after learning how chemistry plays a role in ceramics. The students read an article titled, “The Chemistry of Pottery” and wrote a supporting paragraph describing different aspects of chemistry found in ceramics. Mrs. Brown explained the importance of the clay, glazes, and the different firing techniques for the ceramic tiles.
In chemistry classes, the students researched their own element writing a paper and giving a presentation for their midterm assessment. It was great to have the students see how the different subjects can be related. The chemistry and art departments hope to continue this project in the following years and create a complete periodic table for display.
