Students Test Heat Retention in Solar House Contest

Students in Mrs. Friedrichsen’s Honors Environmental Science class tested the power of the sun in a solar house contest. Each student built a model passive solar house using paper boxes. The goal of the project was to help students visualize how solar radiation is absorbed and retained as heat in eco-friendly homes.

Students used a variety of insulations, foil reflectors, windows, dark colors, and sealants to complete their projects. The winning project was lined with tiles to hold the heat. The second place entry contained a flask of water, and the third place box held rocks and sand.
