The Villa Maria swim team captured its 14th consecutive District 1 swimming title on Saturday, March 5. The team moves on to Bucknell University in two weeks to compete for the state title.
On Day 1 the team got off to a great start as both relays captured 1st place including a new District 1 record in the 200 Free Style Relay set by Emily Cornell, Maura McManus, Olivia Giampietro, and Nina Smith. Other highlights of day 1 included senior Emily Cornell taking 2nd in the 200 Freestyle (1:51.69 breaking existing record), junior Hope Reynolds capturing 4th in the 200 IM (2:09.54), sophomore Nina Smith taking 2nd in the 50 Free (24.44), and sophomore Kaitlyn Agger taking 2nd in the 100 Butterfly (58.06). Day 1 ended with Villa in first place with 314.5 points and Gwynedd Mercy in second with 210 points.
Day 2 got off to a quick start with Villa capturing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the 100 Freestyle. Junior Maura McManus led the way finishing 2nd (52.89). Next up senior Grace Carey showed Villa could handle the distance events finishing 3rd in a very competitive 500 freestyle (5:04.83). In the 100 backstroke Emily Cornell put an exclamation point on the day and took Villa only individual gold finishing 1st (55.42). In the final individual event, the 100 Breaststroke, Katelyn Chick captured 4th place (1:05.95). The final event of the meet was the 400 Freestyle Relay, in which Villa finished in 2nd place, securing its 14th Consecutive District title. The final score for the top 3 schools was Villa Maria 567.5, Gwynedd Mercy 338, and Nazareth Academy 330.
