Awards and recognition for achievement in academics, athletics, fine arts and activities were presented to members of the Class of 2016 at the annual Honors Convocation, held Wednesday, June 1, 2016. Academic awards recognition included awards for valedictorian and salutatorian, and excellence in Theology, English, History and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Physical and Biological Sciences, World Language, Fine Arts, and Computer Science.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Dr. Elinor Langton Award to Katherine Krepelka. The award is voted on by the senior class and alumnae to distinguish a young woman who is active in her school community, a born leader, good listener, faith-filled, enthusiastic, courageous, and kind to all she meets. It was created to honor the memory of Elinor Langton, Class of 1918.
The evening’s speaker was Ms. Kristen Sproat Colley, member of the VMA Class of 2004, and graduate of the US Naval Academy. She told the graduates that service is more than a resume item, feel-good effort, or even military achievement. “Real service is understanding the needs of others and putting them before yourself,” she said.
The seniors also celebrated with song, performing both their class song and the Alma Mater. A reception hosted by the VMA Parents Association followed.
