Villa Maria’s basketball team defeated AACA rival Merion Mercy 44-30 in an exciting home game on Thursday, January 12. The Hurricanes led through most of the game. The teams were one point apart at 9-8 at the end of the first quarter, but Villa Maria pulled ahead at the half 22-14, and finished the thrid quarter up 35-20.
Sophomore Abby Walheim scored 19 points, and freshman Paige Lauder had 14. Senior Marissa Picinich controlled the glass, especially in the 2nd half, collecting 10 rebounds. Walheim contributed 7 rebounds and and Lauder had 6.
The Hurricanes are currently in second place in the AACA, behind St. Basil.
