Villa Maria inducted new members into the National Honor Society (NHS), French Honor Society, Latin Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and Math Honor Society in a ceremony held on Wednesday, March 8, 2017.
The evening began with a candle lighting ceremony in which the candles symbolized the key NHS values: leadership, scholarship, service and character. NHS president Jen Finley spoke about leadership. Maura McManus lit the candle for scholarship and spoke about scholarship meaning a love of learning more than a good GPA. Erin Zimmerman lit the candle for service, and thanked the parents for their selflessness in getting their children to this point. Devon Minuto lit the candle for character, and urged the girls to overcome the pressure from peers and the world at large to conform, and to find the good in others.
Officers from the language honor societies introduced their organizations. Nicole Miller, Alison Van Grinsven, Grace McClatchy, and Julie Gillen introduced pres of French honor society spoke about the language honor societies and membership requirements. Each inductee was then called to the stage to receive her society cord and pin.
The guest speaker for the evening was Ms. Gloria Yu, a 1994 graduate of Villa Maria. Ms. Yu, who is also acting as a Capstone mentor for senior Echo Hu, recalled her days at Villa and forcing herself to step outside her comfort zone and take on a leadership role. She said leadership lessons learned at Villa and in her college and law school years helped prepare her to lead a team in her craeer now. Ms. Yu also emphasized the need to be willing to fail, and to maintaining an open mind and heart when working with others.
The evening ended with refreshments and photos in the gym.
