Members of the Class of 2017 received awards and recognition at the annual Honors Convocation on Wednesday, May 31. Academic recognition included awards for valedictorian and salutatorian, and excellence in Theology, English, History and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Physical and Biological Sciences, World Language, Fine Arts, and Computer Science.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Dr. Elinor Langton Award to Grace McClatchy. The award is voted on by the senior class and alumnae to distinguish a young woman who is active in her school community, a born leader, good listener, faith-filled, enthusiastic, courageous, and kind to all she meets. It was created to honor the memory of Elinor Langton, Class of 1918.
Villa Maria alumna Sara E. Lally, M.D., was the guest speaker for the evening. Dr. Lally, an ophthalmologist specializing in ocular oncology at Wills Eye Hospital, encouraged the graduates to “live like a hero, find your passion, and fuel your passion. Each and every one of you is destined for greatness.”
The seniors also celebrated with song, performing both their class song and the Alma Mater. A reception hosted by the VMA Parents Association followed.
