We are pleased to offer a Professional Development Day for art teachers (Act 48 credits available) on Friday, Oct. 6, 2017. The theme of the in-service will be standards-based arts education, providing teachers with opportunities to explore the newest National Visual Arts Standards and Media Arts Standards through an interactive workshop and/or attending studio and art history courses.
Drs. Marilyn Stewart and Amy Pfeiler-Wunder, Dept. of Art Education & Crafts, will facilitate a hands-on workshop titled, “A Closer Look: Standards in Action.” The workshop will take teachers through a standards based “lesson,” interpreting the work of a contemporary artist. Teachers will then participate in artmaking and curatorial activities as well as assessment discussions. In addition, teachers will have an opportunity to track a student’s artistic development from Pre-K to Advanced High School using a single standard strand. Classroom posters of the national standards will be provided to participants.
More information for this event will be sent in a separate email.
On Friday, October 13, 2017 the Communication Design Department will offer a day-long Design Camp for high school students. Students will get a hands-on introduction to digital and print design, giving them a sampling of what they will learn in KUCD.

9:30–11:00 Digital/Interactive Project
11:00–12:00 Lunch & Presentation about the Communication Design Program
12:00–1:30 Print (Graphic Design) Project
Students will get to use a letterpress to create cards to take home and have their work displayed on the CD website.
We invite students and parents/guardians to attend the CVPA Open House on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017 where students can have portfolios reviewed for admission by art faculty from the departments of Art & Art History, Communication Design, or Art Education and Crafts. Please note that admission into the visual arts programs at KU is two parts: being admitted to the university and getting a portfolio accepted.
On-line registration for the Open House is available here.
The application fee for admission will be waived for students attending and applying at this event.
