Villa Maria students traveled to Romero Center Ministries in Camden, NJ for a service trip from Thursday, October 19, to Sunday, October 22. The students performed service for two full days at various sites: South Jersey Food Bank, the Abigail House (a nursing home), and the Urban Promise Thrift Store. In addition to service opportunities, the students participated in social justice activities, prayer, reflection, group discussions, and a tour of Camden. The students also participated in a Spanish-language Mass at St. Joseph Pro Cathedral in Camden.
The students also participated in an exercise designed to illustrate the great difficulty of living on limited resources. The girls shopped as “families” in one of only two grocery stores in Camden. Each family member only had $3 to contribute to the food budget for the day, so each family had to feed itself for $12.
A group from Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, NY was also attending for the weekend.
