The Hurricanes won their second state field hockey title in four years on Saturday, November 18, 2017. The team defeated Wyoming Valley West High School 2-1 in the hard-fought PIAA Class AA championship game.
Junior Hannah Miller got the Hurricanes off to a strong start with a goal less than two minutes into the game, with an assist from senior Erin Finley. Wyoming Valley West tied the game up just before the end of the first half. Miller scored again five minutes into the second half, and the Hurricane defense, with goalie senior Dani Acuna, held strong to deny a tying goal.
The victory caps a playoff run that had the Hurricanes dominating all opponents. They beat New Oxford 10-0 in the first round, Berks Catholic 9-0 in the quarterfinal, and Twin Valley 5-0 to reach the state final.
The field hockey state title is Villa Maria’s fourth in school history. The Hurricanes have been to the state final three times in the last four years.
