Villa Maria drew upon the symbol of the nails in the cross at the start of Easter week. On Monday morning in homeroom, each student received a string pendant holding a nail. Students and faculty alike wore the nail their necks all day Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, as an acknowledgement that man’s sinfulness nailed Jesus to the Cross.
At the call to worship before mass on Wednesday, peer ministers carried in a large wooden cross. Four nails were hammered into the cross, and everyone in the Villa Maria community came forward and hung their nail on the cross as a sign of our solidarity with suffering humanity at the Cross of Christ. Mass was celebrated on a bare stage, with the cross hung with nails as the only decoration.
