Students Travel to New Mexico for Summer Service

At the end of the 2017-2018 school year, 12 rising seniors and two faculty members from Villa Maria traveled to St. Mary’s Mission in Tohatchi, New Mexico on the Navajo Nation. The group from Villa Maria worked and prayed with the Franciscan sisters serving at St. Mary’s.
The girls participated in outreach as they visited home-bound members of the Navajo Nation; performed service opportunities such as gardening, cleaning, and painting; gathered together for daily prayer services; visited Navajo Nation sites such as Canyon de Chelly and Window Rock in Arizona; and lived in a traditional Navajo home known as a hogan. The group experienced the meaning of the Navajo word “hozho,” which means “peace, harmony, and balance.”
