Senior basketball player Abby Walheim scored her 1,000th Villa Maria career point in a home game against Merion Mercy on Tuesday, January 8. After the team co-captain made the record-setting basket, teammates hugged her and play stopped for a brief celebration of the milestone.
“Abby Walheim is one of the most competitive kids I have ever coached,” said coach Kathy McCartney. “She has a burning desire to be successful and win every little battle. Although her main sport is lacrosse, her competitive spirit and work ethic has helped her become a great basketball player. She has been a really fun kid to coach.
Abby is a two-time AACA All-Star who averages 17.2 points per game, with 6.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists. In addition to being an outstanding basketball player, Abby excels at lacrosse, and was a key contributor in last year’s lacrosse PIAA state title win, the first ever for Villa Maria in that sport. She plans to play lacrosse for Villanova University next year.
