Basketball Wins District 1 Championship; Lauder Reaches 1,000 Career Points

The Hurricanes captured the PIAA 5A District 1 basketball championship on Saturday, March 2. The team defeated Mount St. Joseph 61-37 in a game played at Temple University’s Liacouras Center. Senior Abby Walheim led the scoring for Villa Maria with 25, followed by juniors Paige Lauder with 14 and Maddy Ryan with 8.

The Hurricanes jumped out to a large lead, ending the first quarter with a 21-3 lead, and closing the first half up 38-13. The Mount was unable to close the gap in the second half, with the score 49-21 at the end of third quarter.

Paige Lauder celebrated a personal milestone after the game, scoring her 1,000 career point at the end of the first half. The team recognized her achievement after the game in the locker room.

Next up for the Hurricanes is the PIAA state tournament. They will play Elizabethtown in the first round on Saturday, March 9, at 6:30 p.m. at Spring-Ford High School. Tickets will be sold at the door.
