Seniors Create Broadcasts for KYW through Newstudies Porgram

By Cecilia Oberkircher ’20

Senior Caroline Wolfington and I participated in KYW’s Newstudies program this fall. We discovered the opportunity through the Villa Maria Guidance Department.

The program entailed meeting on four Saturdays from October 12 through November 9 at the KYW Newsradio studio in Philadelphia. We listened to panels of professionals in the journalism and broadcasting fields. They explained how they entered their careers and provided advice for us to become involved in different forms of broadcasting and journalism (newspaper, sports broadcasting, radio, television, etc.).

Additionally, in small groups, we took part in workshop classes led by instructors who have experience in the fields. They also facilitated discussions that included ways to enhance our journalistic and broadcasting skills. Assisted by them, we completed a final project, which was to write a story about an event in our community. It culminated in our broadcast recordings airing on KYW.

Overall, the experience was very rewarding as our writing abilities improved and we learned many useful techniques for writing newscasts. Being able to pick the brains of professionals allowed us to gain insight into how a career would look in the journalism and broadcasting fields.
