The faculty, staff, and administration of Villa Maria participated in an in-service on diversity, equity, and inclusion. The day began with a prayer service, followed by a presentation on the history of race and private schools by Dean of Students Brittany Thompson.
DeVon Jackson of CHānj Consulting, was the guest speaker for the event. Mr. Jackson, who is also the DEI Director at Salesianum School, spoke about how to be an ally to underrepresented groups, especially in a school community. He touched on issues of personal and social identity, allyship, cultural competency, and unconscious bias. He called on members of the Villa community to question their own biases and to work against oppression through support of and as an advocate for the oppressed population.
Mr. Jackson’s message, delivered with honesty, humor, and compassion, resonated with the faculty, staff, and administration and started a conversation that Villa Maria plans to continue. The in-service was facilitated by the VMA faculty/staff DEI Committee.
