Freshmen Inducted into Children of Mary

Members of the Class of 2024 were inducted into the Children of Mary association in an outdoor morning prayer service. Children of Mary is one of Villa Maria’s oldest and best-loved traditions, calling all students to a way of life characterized by prayer, devotion to Mary, and service.

During the prayer service, which included readings and songs, Mission and Ministry officers Micaela Shackleford, Maura Sweeney, and Stefanie Janowicz offered personal reflections on the call to be children of Mary. Freshmen also received bookmarks with the following pledge to be children of Mary:

In imitation of Mary, Mother of God, Mother of the Church, and my mother,

I choose to reach out in hope, even though there are many temptations to give up.

I choose to grow in love, even when it is painful and demands sacrifice.

I choose to hold firmly to the courage of my convictions, even when I stand alone.

I choose to create gentleness, where there is harshness of manner and hardness of heart.

I choose to serve God’s people in the Children of Mary tradition. Amen.
