World History Classes Skirmish on the Field

Ms. Beiduk reports that her World History I classes are finishing up their study of Ancient Greece. “Each student made their own Greek style shield (apsis) which were used by Greek foot soldiers (hoplites),” she said. “Their designs reflect something about their family name or Greek letters or fierce animals. We used pool noodles (Courtesy of Ms. Yost, Latin teacher) for spears (sarissa, dory). Sometimes hoplites also used short swords (xiphos, spatha). Students learned about phalanx formations and maneuvers and participated in a few skirmishes.”
