Students Host Dance Lesson with Step Afrika!

Villa Maria’s Dance Company hosted a virtual lesson in stepping with dancer Nick Stewart from Step Afrika!, Stepping is a percussive dance style practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities.

Students from Villa’s dance company, joined by members of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, learned about the origins and history of stepping and watched several Step Afrika! performances before connecting live with Mr. Stewart. The students learned a dance in sections, with Stewart demonstrating the complicated moves and rhythms.

Step Afrika! blends percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities; traditional African dances; and an array of contemporary dance and art forms into a cohesive artistic experience. Performances integrate songs, storytelling, humor and audience participation. Founded in 1994 by C. Brian Williams, Step Afrika! is the first professional company dedicated to the tradition of stepping. The company tours across the globe.

Thank you Step Afrika! for a fun and informative lesson!
