Steve McClatchy, author of the best selling book Decide: Work Smarter, Reduce Your Stress, and Lead by Example, shared with our students that what shapes a person’s career and life, and defines them as a leader, is the decisions they make each day of their lives. Speaking with humor and high energy, McClatchy helped the freshmen to learn for themselves how “great decision-making habits” can yield a lifetime of accomplishments. His examples were fun and relevant and really made the girls think.
McClatchy also offered tips on “personal branding,” telling the girls, “If you think you are projecting one way to the world, but you are not getting the results you were looking for,” then take the time to make sure your actual lifestyle and brand are one and the same. Mr. McClatchy encouraged the students to figure out what makes them different, unique, and special, because embracing that will allow them to see that they have been their greatest asset all along!
Villa Maria’s art teacher Mrs. Kate Brown also talked to the freshmen about emotional intelligence, the ability to recognize your emotions, understand what they’re telling you, and realize how your emotions affect people around you. Brown said that this ability involves understanding how others feel and thereby managing relationships more effectively. Brown has a personal coaching business called Strategies to Level Up. In the fall she will be offering seminars to the Villa Maria student community.
