The rowing team recognized its senior rowers on their Senior Day on May 1 at the Manny Flick 5 in Philadelphia. The girls received flowers and posed for photos with their parents.
“Celebrating our seniors that day, they took to the water like category 5 Hurricanes,” Coach Liz Miller says. “In the flights, the lightweight 4+ placed 3rd in the top heat just and the varsity 4+ won their heat and had the 8th fastest time out of 26 boats. These finishes put the team in a really strong place for the City Championships, their hard work on and off the water is truly paying off!”
Miller says that the crews have had a strong showing in the Philadelphia Manny Flick series. At the 5th regatta, in the time trials the Novice 8+ placed 1st out of 15 crews and the Jv 4+ was 12th of 20.
The seniors have contributed to building Villa’s largest rowing roster ever. With 25 rowers and coxswains, the team is entering the championship portion of the season with Philadelphia City Championships Mother’s Day weekend, the Stotesbury Cup Regatta on May 20-21, and if crews qualify, the Scholastic Rowing Association of America National Championship on May 27-28.
Coach Miller highlights an event in April that was especially fun for the team. “At the beginning of April, we had a great day of racing at Villa Joseph’s lake in Bucks County in a tri-race with them and Gwynedd Mercy,” she reports. “The day was capped off with some 500 meter dash ‘draw’ races in which the eights were a mix of rowers and coxswains from all three squads. That experience has lead to great sports(wo)manship amongst the teams and we love having more boats to cheer for when, of course, they aren’t racing the Hurricanes!”
Congratulations to the Villa Maria senior rowers!
