Letter from the President

Welcome to the 2015-2016 year! Villa is growing in leaps and bounds and the Alumnae have played an important role in that growth. Thank you so much for your kind contributions of time, prayers and other resources. These gifts have both preserved and evolved the spirit of Villa Maria for the generations of girls who have followed us. As one father of four graduates said recently, “I sent my daughters here to educate the whole girl”. Those of us who are now a few years graduated know what that means as we strive to make the world we serve better every day.

Your willingness to come back and visit has been joyously welcomed by your sisters in the Alumnae as well as current students and faculty. We have been able to share our paths of achieving some truly remarkable careers, the ways in which we creatively applied beloved academic subject matter to forge unique life pursuits, how we’ve maintained an ongoing commitment to service, especially those of us engaged in directly helping others in need, and we’ve shared our beautiful families, a topic very much present in the minds of today’s young woman. The more we can do of that, the better. Consider sharing your story. Consider being a mentor or a person to shadow for the Capstone project, the Senior Class experiential learning endeavor. Whether you share with the current students or with other Alumnae members, whether it is a corporate career, a non-profit pursuit, or the most important role of rearing a new young family, we are each other’s best network, and our network is tremendously powerful.

Come back and cheer for your team! With the help of many generous contributions from the Alumnae, Villa’s field athletes will play on a turf field in the fall of 2015. How great it will be to see our world class athletes on a world class field. Our swim team has already created an amazing legacy in the last 10 years, and they love their Alumnae. Each one of the 10 sports clubs is composed of scholars, artists, peer ministry leaders, and young ladies of grace. It’s wonderful to meet them, and they will love to see you.

The events showcasing our literary, visual and musical artists are often open to us. Consider attending the winter concert in December to hear In Old Judea, or the charity art show in March that this year raised over $12,000 in memory of one of our own, Abbey Mallon, an angel in the Class of 2014. We have shared our literary magazine, Festival, with those whose love is the written word, and it’s a treasure.

Each year, we attract more Alumnae back to Villa. We continue to evolve our events to reach a wider range of graduates. In 2014, we introduced the Young Alumnae Happy Hour for classes 2000-2014 in December. The family Basketball Alumnae night in January has made friends among our children. We would love to hear your ideas on other ways to connect.

The dates of current Alumnae and current school events are posted on the website and published periodically in Views of Villa. Please send us your news and pictures. That’s the best part!

As we set off on this next year, please know that the Children of Mary, the Campus Ministry and all the Villa Maria family pray for you and yours every day,

—Mary Jane Raymond, Class of 1978
