Varsity Basketball
Pictured: Villa's 2023-24 varsity basketball team.
Hurricanes basketball is a strong contender year after year. Since 1992 the team has won 11 District 1 titles and made many deep runs into the state tournament.
Coach McCartney’s goal is not only to win championships but to help prepare her players for life beyond Villa Maria. She feels strongly that the life lessons acquired during a high school basketball career will lay the foundation for a successful adult life. Villa basketball standout Siobhan O’Connor echoes those sentiments.
“Villa basketball is such a big part of who I am today. The relationships established with teammates and coaches have proven to be lifelong connections. The biggest thing I developed during my four years was trust in my teammates and coaches. It not only made me a better basketball player, but a better person as well. You can’t win in life alone and you can’t win on the court by yourself. My work ethic coupled with my ability to trust others have been foundational in my everyday life.”

Kathy McCartney finished her 35th season at Villa Maria and had amassed 641 wins at the helm of the program. Her longevity coupled with the team’s success has made the Villa basketball program one of the most consistently successful programs in the state. During her tenure the Hurricanes have won 18 AACA titles, 11 District I championships, and have made several deep runs into the PIAA State Tournament. In 2017 Coach McCartney was recognized as an outstanding mentor to area youth by Youth Mentoring Partnership. In 2018 she was inducted into the Chester County Sports Hall of Fame.
Coach McCartney has helped many of her players move on to successful collegiate and professional careers. Hurricanes have graced rosters at schools like Villanova, Columbia, Penn State, Quinnipiac, UMass, Loyola, University of Vermont, Holy Family, Jefferson, Albright, DeSales, and Lycoming, to name a few. Coach McCartney is particularly proud of the fact that many of these players have gone on to captain their respective college teams. Several now roam the sidelines as coaches at the college level.
