Gifts of Stock

Transferring appreciated shares of stock as a donation to Villa Maria allows you to claim a deduction against your federal income taxes for the current market value of the shares, without having to pay any capital-gains tax on the profit from the shares. This could amount to huge savings for those who have realized substantial gains on their stock portfolios over the years.

To Make a Gift of Securities

Instructions on how to transfer stock are explained in detail below.  If you have any questions, please contact Kathy McCartney at 610-854-6121 or kmccartney@vmahs.org.

DTC Transfer of Stock

If you are interested in making a gift of stock to Villa Maria Academy, please follow these steps:

  • Ask your broker to deliver the securities to Vanguard Brokerage Services at DTC-0062 for further credit to Villa Maria Academy High School.
  • Our Vanguard Brokerage Account Number is 70863089
  • VMA Tax Id No:  23-1355130
  • The DTC # is 0062, which identifies the shares are going to Vanguard Brokerage.

It is very important to us that we appropriately acknowledge the generosity of our benefactors in a timely and accurate manner. It can be difficult to identify the donor after a gift of securities is processed, particularly in the case of an electronic transfer. Therefore, please ask your broker to include your name and address in the DTC transfer instructions, and also please inform Kathy McCartney, Director of Advancement, of your gift by email, phone, or letter.

Gift Valuation Date

1. Physical Securities

The gift valuation date for physical securities is determined by the postmark on the envelope used to mail the securities. For hand delivery of securities, the gift valuation date is the date the securities are turned over to Villa Maria representatives.

2. Electronic Transfers

The gift valuation date for securities sent to us via DTC is the date the securities are deposited into our Vanguard account.

Valuation Method

The value of a stock gift is calculated by averaging the high and low quoted selling prices for the stock as of the gift valuation date.

Acknowledgment of Gift

As soon as a securities gift is received and matched to a donor, the Advancement Office sends an acknowledgment letter stating the nature of the gift, the gift valuation date, and the gift valuation amount.
