Villa Maria offers students a variety of opportunities to compete on academic teams.
Mock Trial is sponsored by the Young Lawyers of Pennsylvania Bar. Interested students are offered an opportunity to compete with other Pennsylvania High School Mock Trial teams. The students prepare both the prosecution and the defense of a case proposed by the Young Lawyers and assume the roles of lawyers and witnesses in the mock case. Participants develop thought processes and persuasive and extemporaneous speaking skills. The formal competitions are held before a Chester County Common Pleas Judge at Chester County Court House. Practices are held after school on availability of the assisting attorney.
The goal of the Villa Maria Model UN program and club is to guide students in learning about the world of international diplomacy and the dynamics of geopolitics, and to develop and hone debate and research skills. To participate fully in the Villa Model UN Club experience, it is necessary for students to attend a monthly club meeting, either on the first or second Monday of the month. Members also participate in the various training sessions and practices that are held throughout the academic year, including at least three Saturday programs held at neighboring schools. Membership is open to interested students of all grades.
PA Mathematics League
Pennsylvania Mathematics League hosts monthly contests to challenge and motivate students who have an interest and ability in mathematics. The contests are conducted by mail and supervised by the school moderator. Each contest is a thirty minute, six question test for which participants may use a TI-84 calculator. Members are required to attend five out of six meetings, work on the test for the full thirty minutes, and be open to discussion after the contest. On the High School contests, an interested 9th or 10th grader should be able to solve 3 to 5 of the 6 problems. Our 6th question is challenging for the most gifted students. The key is to encourage students to enjoy a challenge and to learn from it to find problem-solving discussions stimulating. The names of the students with perfect scores and the highest cumulative scores across the state are published each month in the County Summary Report. The schools with the highest scores are also listed.
